Sydney closes beaches after first fatal shark attack in 60 years | Abroad

Several beaches in Sydney, including iconic Bondi Beach, were closed on Thursday after a swimmer was bitten to death by a white shark. The last time a shark bite killed someone off the coast of Sydney was in 1963.

Emergency services received a report on Wednesday afternoon about a swimmer who had been attacked by a white shark at Little Bay, about 15 kilometers from the center of the megacity of Sydney. On arrival, the rescuers could do nothing more, only human remains were found in the water. Eyewitnesses told how the swimmer was mauled by what they described as a great white shark over four meters long.

A fisherman who saw the scene from a rock told Australia’s ABC News “horrible.” While sharks are more likely to strike off the Australian coast, they rarely strike near Sydney. Fatal attacks are also very rare in Australia, last year three people died as a result of a shark bite.

The police are looking for the great white shark with helicopters, jet skis and drones, but it has not yet been found. As a precaution, all beaches in the Little Bay area will therefore remain closed on Thursday.
