Sweden’s curlers have bounced back from the disappointing Winter Olympics in Milan by becoming world champions for the 13th time. At the World Cup in the USA, Skip Niklas Edin’s team beat Canada 9:6 in the final.
The Canadians, who celebrated their Olympic victory at the Winter Games, were on the ice with a different team at the title fights in Ogden, Utah. The German curlers led by Skip Marc Muskatewitz finished the World Championships in ninth place out of 13 participants.
Sweden took the lead in the first end of the final and did not relinquish it as the game progressed. “After the Olympics we were very disappointed. I felt like we carried a burden on our shoulders this week,” said Edin, who celebrated his eighth World Cup title: “We had to prove to ourselves that we can still curl at a high level. I think we played fantastic and stayed calm.”
At the Winter Games, the Swedes came ninth and clearly fell short of expectations, only managing two wins.
