The German runner-up of VfL Wolfsburg will meet the Double winners of Bayern Munich on Saturday (2 p.m.). The duel of the strongest teams in the past seasons could offer the best entertainment – and also initial findings for the new season.
One of the Munich colleagues José Barcala has one thing in front of his Wolfsburg colleague Stephan Lerch: he has already sung – international Lea Schüller praises her new coach for this: “The performance was very good, but I generally also very convinced of what is happening on the pitch,” said the striker in the press conference in front of the Supercup.
In Wolfsburg, on the other hand, the return ritual is still facing the return. Previously, the coach has the game in Karlsruhe in mind: “Every competitive athlete wants to win titles. The attitude is clear, the motivation is clear,” he said. “We can prepare for an attractive and exciting game. I would like to bring this title to Wolfsburg.”
Victory for Bavaria last year
Last year the title went through an early goal by Klara Bühl to Bavaria. In the Bundesliga, VfL won 2-0 in the first half of the season in Wolfsburg, in the second half of the season the Munich team won the top game 3-1. At the end of the season, FC Bayern secured the championship for the third time in a row. The southern Germans are also ahead with the economic possibilities, for transfers and salaries – the roles seem distributed.
“From a sporting point of view, we give everything that we can stand up and I believe that we also have the quality for it. We want to be the hungry challenger,” emphasized Lerch. “The economic framework in Munich, also the city and the association have an enormous radiance. If you also observe which players are fetched and which were in the room – this is a statement and a big challenge for us. But you can give everything in your framework.”
Great upheaval in Wolfsburg
Behind VfL is the greatest upheaval in the history of the club: 15 players went, 13 new Kamen. In addition to Alexandra Popp and Joelle Wedemeyer, Svenja Huth is one of the only players who already played for the club in Lerch’s first term as a VfL coach.
“Also because of the last season, which was very challenging, it feels like a restart. I have the feeling that we have good energy,” said Huth, who will take over the captain’s office together with Popp in the coming season. “We had a very intensive and good preparation. The time in the training camp with the entire team was important to move closer together.”
“Bring our DNA to the square”
A lot was also practiced in Thuringia last week. Lerch explained his idea of the dominant football, the rhythm that his team should determine – in principle this also applies to the duel with Bayern: “It is important for us to bring our DNA developed in the past few weeks. We also want to impose our game on such a top opponent,” said the coach. “This is challenging because Bavaria also has the aim of dominant. But we have a plan of how we want to act and primarily look at us.”
Prominent new additions to both teams – and Oberdorf
With his team, goalkeeper Stina Johannes, who, like the currently injured defender Sophia Kleinhern from Frankfurt, switched to VfL, and the former Freiburg attacker Cora Zicai are among the most prominent new ones. Bavaria, among other things, brought the defenders Vanessa Gilles from the French series champion Ol Lyonnes and Stine Ballisager from AC Florence and midfielder Barbara Dunst, who came to Munich from Frankfurt.
After her cruciate ligament rupture, Lena Oberdorf, which was changed from Wolfsburg a year ago, could be used against her ex-club for the first time. “She is really fit, makes great progress and is close to her top shape. But I will not reveal the line-up,” said FCB coach Barcala.
The meaning of the supercup
15,000 tickets are sold for the game. The women’s Supercup was held for the first time after a long break, the DFB wants to make women’s football more popular, especially in regions in which it is not so strongly represented.
“It’s nice if we can push the enthusiasm,” said Svenja Huth. “But we also have potential. The capacity of the stadium is more than 30,000. Maybe one or the other will come by at short notice.”
After all, almost a week before the Bundesliga start, the first trophy of the season is awarded. “The game is of great importance, it is the first way to win a title,” emphasized Barcala and Lerch unison. “Nevertheless, you shouldn’t overestimate the game,” added Huth: “It is not a finger at what the season could look like. The league requires a constant form. But maybe the game can give a boost for the start of the season.”
For Stephan Lerch, victory would mean a successful (re -) debut – however, he would not free it from singing or other rituals.
