Supercup passes HV Volendam’s nose after blistering final

The handball players of HV Volendam grab next to the Supercup after a nerve-racking final. It lost in the final seconds to Lions (33-32), who were also too strong in the battle for the championship. Eprahim Jerry was able to equalize with a free ball with the last throw, but it ended up high over the target.

In the run-up to the Supercup final against Lions, trainer Geert Hinskens was confident. “I estimate our chances are higher than last year. We may even be the slight favourite”, he looked ahead. It was very even in the opening phase. The score went from 2-2 to 14-14. Volendam then took the lead and did not give it away before the break. The score at halftime was 19-15 in favor of the Volendam handball players.

The last part of the first half gave the team the confidence to extend the score from 17-22 to 22-26 after the break. The Limburgers then smelled blood and the margin became smaller and smaller.

Volendam lost control of the match from one moment to the next. Volendam got messier and were overrun by Lions. The reigning national champion made up for the gap in the last ten minutes. Lions even took the lead in the closing minutes. Volendam was able to level the score in the last second, but the free ball went high (33-32).
