‘Sunken’ house in the Amsterdam Vondelpark pond: “Is it something with GroenLinks?”

A special sight in the Vondelpark in Amsterdam: since yesterday afternoon there has been a house, or rather a roof, in the middle of the pond. Nobody knows exactly what the purpose of the ‘sunken’ house is, but the underwater house certainly attracts a lot of attention.

“I wondered why there was a house in the water,” says a British tourist. “This is my first day in Amsterdam and I was wondering if it was normal.” The tourist is not the only one who looks at the work of art with an oblique eye. “I think it’s fun. A house for ducks and birds, but actually a people’s house. I wouldn’t know what’s behind it.”

Other curious visitors think there is a message behind the house. “Probably something to do with the water level of the sea. That if we don’t do anything, many houses will be flooded”, says a man. Still not everyone is one hundred percent sure. “Does it have something to do with GroenLinks?”

Flood

Not everyone is happy with the new artwork in the park. “In 1953 half of my mother’s family died during the flood disaster. I think it is very bad and not beautiful. In the evenings on television you constantly see misery all over the world with flooding. Then they put a house in the water here , incomprehensible.”

For the time being, the big question is who placed the ‘sunken’ house in the pond of the Vondelpark and, above all, for what reason the artist did this.
