The Commonwealth removed 20 cubic meters more of plastic debris from the beaches in August than in July

The Association of Municipalities warned this Friday of a “sharp increase” in the volume of waste that the ‘quitanatas’ vessels have been withdrawn from the coast of the Costa del Sol.

The boats managed by the joint entity this summer collected in August 54.03 cubic meters of waste compared to 30.85 in July, which represented an increase of 75 percent.

Most of the increase is due to the presence of plastics, a material from which about 39 cubic meters were removed in August compared to July 19 and whose collection doubled during the past month in all the municipalities of the region.

Of the rest of the waste extracted from the beaches of the Costa del Sol, 5.46 cubic meters were wood and 4.68, algae.

By municipalities, in Benalmádena a total of 4.44 cubic meters of waste was collected; 1.61 in Casares; 8.51 in Estepona; 4.49 in Fuengirola; 1.61 in Manilva; 21.96 in Marbella; 7.98 in Mijas; and 3.18 in Torremolinos.

Four coastal boats and ten beach boats provide the cleaning service for the region’s coast from June 1 to September 15.

The ships that operate on the coast carry out their work especially in the vicinity of ports, underwater discharge pipes or mouths of torrents.

Those who act near the beaches collect the waste floating solids near the coast.

The boats work between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday, and from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
