Biathlon Olympic champion Denise Herrmann just missed out on the mass start title at the Summer World Championships in Ruhpolding.

The 33-year-old was ahead on Sunday after the first three shooting stages, but then made her only mistake and was caught by three-time winter world champion Dorothea Wierer.

Herrmann finished 9.4 seconds behind the Italian, who missed once on the first shooting. Third place went to individual world champion Marketa Davidova (Czech Republic).

Wierer had already won the super sprint on Friday, her compatriot Lisa Vittozzi won the sprint on Saturday, in which Herrmann was sixth.

In the mass start, Vanessa Voigt (24) finished 18th as the second best German.
