Koog Zaandijk has more than lived up to his favorite role against fellow provincial AKC Blauw-Wit tonight. The visitors from Amsterdam were not involved from the first whistle and lost 25-18.

In the first round of the Korfbal League, the game between Blauw-Wit and KZ ended in a draw, but tonight in Koog aan de Zaan there was clearly a big difference in strength between the two teams. KZ took the initiative early in the game and ran out to a 7-3 lead. Blauw-Wit had a lot of trouble scoring, especially in the first half, and at halftime the team from Amsterdam had only successfully found the basket six times: 11-6.

Resistance broken

After the break, the level went up for both teams. Both KZ and Blauw-Wit shot more accurately. After a good phase, Blauw-Wit came within two points of the home team, but partly due to three striking hits by Marijn van den Goorbergh, the gap soon grew to seven again. Blauw-Wit’s resistance was finally broken after this and KZ’s victory was no longer in danger: 25-18.

Thanks to the victory, KZ climbs to fourth place in the Korfbal League, the highest korfball competition in the Netherlands. We find Blauw-Wit in eighth place. Groen Geel, the third North Holland team, won 21-23 against last-placed Unitas tonight. The team from Wormer is ninth and therefore penultimate.
