The Ice Cream Machine Showdown: 2026 Test Results
As temperatures rise, the queues in front of ice-cream parlors grow longer, and the prices for a scoop rarely go down. For those unwilling to compromise on their favorite flavors, consumer advocates recommend investing in an ice cream machine. The Stiftung Warentest tested 20 models, and their Swedish counterparts, Råd & Rön, followed suit in April 2026, evaluating 23 machines under the same testing protocol. The verdict is clear: with the right machine, exquisite ice cream can be made at home for less than 50 cents per scoop.
Choosing Between Compressor and Non-Compressor Machines
The key factor in selecting an ice cream maker is not the brand but the technology: compressor or non-compressor? This distinction significantly affects both the results and the price.
Compressor Machines: The Premium Choice
Compressor machines actively cool and allow spontaneous ice-making without prior preparation. According to Stiftung Warentest, these machines consistently produce higher quality ice cream, albeit at a price ranging from approximately 176 to 600 euros. The Swedish test echoed this finding, noting that self-cooling models excel in terms of consistency and texture.
Non-Compressor Machines: The Budget Option
Non-compressor machines offer a budget-friendly alternative, priced between 25 to 70 euros. However, their major downside is the need for the freezer container to be pre-frozen for at least twelve hours before use. Spontaneity is limited, and once a batch is made, the container must be refrozen before the next use.
Interestingly, some newer non-compressor models use a different concept, where the ingredients are frozen in small containers that can be inserted into the machine. This allows users to prepare multiple batches in advance and process them sequentially.
Top Test Winner 2026: Medion MD18387
Out of 20 tested models, seven received a “Good” rating, with lower ratings often attributed to poor handling. The Medion MD18387 stands out as the best choice, offering the best price-performance ratio among compressor machines for approximately 180 euros. It excels across all tested categories, receiving scores in the “good” range: preparation (2.0), handling (1.8), noise (2.0), and environmental factors (1.9). It’s a reliable option for anyone seeking a well-rounded device without breaking the bank.
Homemade Ice Cream: A Cost-Effective Choice
When using high-quality ingredients such as organic milk and real vanilla, the cost per scoop, as calculated by Stiftung Warentest, remains under 50 cents. In comparison, ice cream sold in shops typically ranges from 1.50 to 2.50 euros per scoop. Additionally, making your own ice cream allows you the freedom to choose ingredients, catering to dietary preferences including vegan or lactose-free diets, without unwanted additives.
