The Faroe Islands can continue to dream of their first World Cup participation. Number 136 in the FIFA world rankings with almost 55,000 inhabitants surprisingly defeated the Czech Republic 2-1 (0-0) in World Cup qualifying.
The Faroe Islands celebrated their third win in a row – but a lot still has to happen for the miracle to happen.
The Czech Republic can only do that interim Balance
Hanus Sörensen (67th) and Martin Agnarsson (81st) caused a huge surprise in Torshavn. Adam Karabec had meanwhile equalized for the big favorite (78th).
The Faroe Islands reduced the gap to the Czech Republic in the Group L table to one point. In order to get the coveted second place, the Faroe Islands would have to get at least a draw in the final game against sovereign league leaders Croatia on November 14th and hope that the Czechs slip up against Gibraltar, who have no points.
Only then would the Faroe Islands play in the play-offs for their first participation in a major tournament.
