Stuntend FC Volendam pushes ailing Ajax even further into trouble

FC Volendam caused a stunt on a visit to Ajax. The team of coach Wim Jonk pushes his old club even further into the crisis with the 1-1 draw. The team from Amsterdam remains without a win in the Eredivisie for the seventh game in a row.

The match between Ajax and FC Volendam was already an interesting one beforehand. The New Orange achieved twice as many points as the team from Amsterdam this calendar year. Alfred Schreuder wanted to build on the second half in the Classic against Feyenoord (1-1), because he sent the same eleven names into the field. Remarkable at Volendam was that it played without real attackers and only had four goals in the starting line-up.

A very defensive Volendam easily held its own against a weak Ajax in the opening phase. In the fifth minute, the supporters expressed their dissatisfaction with Schreuder by waving en masse with white handkerchiefs and shouting ‘Schreuder rot’. With that, supporters responded to the advance call from the F-Side.

Volendam goalkeeper Filip Stankovic only had to be alert twice in the first half hour to Edson Álvarez’s bets. The Mexican shot a meter wide from a distance and headed the ball against Stankovic. Volendam retreated far and was forced to play from the counter. Only twice managed to make the crossing towards Gerónimo Rulli, but before the break the counter remained at zero in terms of the number of shots.

Crisis

Ajax was more alert after the break and looked for an attack. The defenders of Volendam had to throw themselves in front of the ball a number of times to block the ball. The crisis in Amsterdam became even bigger in the 59th minute for the often booed Alfred Schreuder. Damon Mirani headed FC Volendam ahead from a free kick by Carel Eiting: 0-1.

Despite a number of offensive substitutions, Ajax had few chances. Brian Brobbey got the ball right at his feet once more. However, the team from Amsterdam did not create any clear-cut chances. Volendam became more confident with the ball, but still ran into the equalizer ten minutes before the end. Substitute Lorenzo Lucca cleverly headed through to Mohammed Kudus, after which he rammed the ball in hard: 1-1.

Ajax squeezed out a true final offensive, but the greatest chance of victory was still for FC Volendam. Henk Veerman squeezed past goalkeeper Rulli, but was kept from scoring in the nick of time.

Ajax is stuck in fifth place in the Eredivisie. Volendam now has thirteen points from eighteen games. On Sunday Ajax will visit Excelsior at 2.30 pm. At the same time, FC Volendam will receive last-kick FC Groningen.
