Strong sentences demanded against two suspects Coolsingel riots: officers pelted and attacked Inland

A 21-year-old Rotterdammer has been sentenced to 15 months in prison, of which three months are conditional, for, among other things, an attempt at aggravated assault. He allegedly threw rocks at officers. He is also openly accused of violence by kicking and throwing objects at two police cars and a surveillance camera. In addition, he is said to have erected one or more barricades. If it is up to the Public Prosecution Service, the man must also pay compensation of 25,500 euros and receive an area ban for the center of the city for 2 years.

A 30-year-old resident of The Hague was sentenced to one year in prison, of which three months were suspended for public violence. He allegedly pelted three police cars with table tops, a bicycle and a fire extinguisher. He threw those objects against or through the windows of those cars. He also kicked the door of a police car. In addition to a prison sentence, the Public Prosecution Service also demanded an area ban for the center of Rotterdam for 2 years and a payment of 20,000 euros to compensate the damage to the police vehicles.

Police Judge

Some rioters who were suspected of less serious offenses had to answer to the police judge earlier. They received prison sentences of up to several months and some also received a restraining order for the center of the city.

The demonstration against the corona policy that November evening turned into serious violence against the police, fire brigade and emergency services. Police were cornered and fired multiple shots, injuring five from bullets. The investigation of the National Criminal Investigation Service into the facts of the use of firearms by the police is still ongoing.

The following four suspects must report to the Rotterdam court on Thursday. The court will rule on February 10 in the first two cases. In total, the police made 73 arrests.
