Strong as a bear Ruud registers title claims

The Norwegian Casper Ruud is determined to focus on his first Grand Slam title and the top of the world rankings.

The 23-year-old French Open finalist prevailed in the quarterfinals of the US Open 6: 1, 6: 4, 7: 6 (7: 4) against the Italian Matteo Berrettini, who had been indisposed for a long time.

After 2:35 hours of play, Ruud eliminated the 2021 Wimbledon finalist and made it through to the semi-finals.

Ruud is one of the three candidates to succeed Russian Daniil Medvedev as world number one. Ruud and Spanish top talent Carlos Alcaraz need to reach the final to overtake the already eliminated Rafael Nadal.

If both reach the final, the winner becomes number one. Record Grand Slam champion Nadal stays ahead if neither Ruud nor Alcaraz reach the New York final.
