Prime Video has also been showing advertising for paying users since the beginning of 2024 – which annoys many. But there are proven ways to avoid spots, at no extra charge.
Use advertising: Offline mode is simple and effective
The most uncomplicated method is the offline mode: download content via the Prime video app on smartphone, tablet or PC and then look at without an internet connection. Then every advertisement is automatically omitted – regardless of the show or the film. However, limits apply: Some titles are not available for license reasons and the number of simultaneous downloads is limited. For the large picture, the device can be easily connected to the TV via HDMI – this is how the streaming remains comfortable and ad -free.
Children’s profile offers freedom of advertising, but little choice
Another trick: use a children’s profile. Amazon does not induce advertising in kids profiles, which benefits users who only want to consume compatible content with children. But that means restriction: only series and films up to approximately age ratios FSK 12 are available, blockbusters or series highlights are eliminated. And although technically legal, it remains unclear whether Amazon allows this loophole in the long term.
AdBlocker, VPN & CO – technology with side effects
If you stream in a browser, you can prevent serious ad blockers such as Ublock Origin, Adguard or Total Adblock advertising. Alternatively, you can pretend the location via VPN – for example in countries such as Belgium or the Netherlands, in which Amazon currently does not deliver any advertising. However, Amazon prohibits the use of such funds in the terms and conditions, and users thus risk blocking access. In addition, the reliability of VPN-based protective mechanisms is inconsistent.
Prime “ad free” subscription – comfort at an additional cost
If you don’t want to use tricks, you can book Amazon’s advertising supplement. This means that the interruptions are omitted, but some trailers before the start of a film remain shown. This surcharge option is currently being discussed in complaints by consumer advocates, since some users feel deceived by the subsequent change. Users of premium amazon accounts have the option of settling against these additional costs via Stiftung Warentest to legally defend themselves by class action or reimbursement.
Why Netflix & Co is not better – trend in streaming
Prime Video is not only with the model – Netflix, Disney+ and Freevee also rely on advertising financing despite a paid subscription. This leads to resentment for many paying users because the statement “advertising” no longer applies in the usual sense. The debate is therefore about transparency, rights of use and the balance of content quality and advertisements.
