When does the Giro d’Italia 2025 take place?

How many stages are there?

In total, the drivers have to cope with 52,500 meters of altitude during the tour, which is 10,000 meters more than in the previous year.

How many teams and drivers are there at the Giro?

23 teams are on the start list of the first Grand Tour a year, including the 18 WorldTour teams, of course. The teams Q36.5, Polti Visitmalta, Tudor and VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè received a wildcard from the organizer, RCS Mediagroup. This will start 184 drivers, and the precise nomination of the drivers will still be pending for this year.

The last German stage winner Georg Steinhauser is sure to be there. The driver from Team EF Education Easy Post won the heavy mountain stage of Selva di Val Gardena to Passo Brocon over 159 kilometers in 2024. This year, too, the 23-year-old can have legitimate hopes for a stage victory.

What are the highlights of the Giro d’Italia?

The first week is characterized by early time trial and many options for the sprinter in the peleton. The first highlight is waiting on the 7th stage when the field has to go to Monte Urano on the way to the finish line in Tagliacozzo. The last three kilometers of the final climb will be the first endurance test.

Cycling fans can also look forward to the 9th stage. A section of the Strade Bianche Einstagen race leads the drivers from Gubbio to Siena and over five gravelectors and 30 kilometers of “white gravel”. In the second week, the teams can already position themselves for the demanding final week.

The Colle Delle Finestre is the final highlight of an intensive third week. It starts with the 16th stage of Piazzola Sul Brenta to San Valentino. There are five mountain ratings on the 199 km and a steep climb. The decision in the overall ranking is expected on the last two mountain stages.

Who is the favorite this year?

Last year Tadej Pogacar secured the Maglia Rosa. However, the Slovenian is not there this year, which is why the UAE team Emirates-XRG relies on the young Spaniard Juan Ayuso. With a strong team at his side, the 22-year-old is one of the top favorites for the overall victory at his Giro premiere.

His worst competitor is likely to be Primož Roglič from the Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe team. The winner of 2023 dueled at the end of March during the Catalonia tour with the 13-year-old Spaniard. In the end, Roglič was ahead and celebrated the overall victory.
