Geologists from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Catholic University of Leuven, together with the Natural History Museum Maastricht and Natuurmonumenten, have been able to determine more precisely how old the quarries in Maastricht are using new modern techniques. The various limestone layers and fossils appear to date from the last age of the dinosaurs, 72.9 to 66 million years ago.
