Still showers in the north after the second wettest first day of Pentecost ever | Inland

Especially in the northern half of the country, even some rain will fall on Monday afternoon. But in the course of the evening it will be mostly dry.

The KNMI issued a code yellow for the whole of the Netherlands on Sunday because of passing thunderstorms. This caused flooding, especially in North Brabant and Limburg.

Almost record

De Bilt has had the second wettest first day of Pentecost ever. On Sunday, according to Weeronline, 21.5 millimeters of rain fell. Since the start of the precipitation measurements in 1906, it has only happened on May 20, 1945 that more precipitation fell on Whit Monday: 23.3 millimeters at the time.

It was much wetter than in De Bilt on Sunday in the south of the country. In the Betuwe and in a wide strip from Eindhoven to Den Bosch, 40 to 60 millimeters fell in many places. For comparison: normally about 68 millimeters falls in the whole month of June.

It caused a nuisance. In Veldhoven, the police called for some time to avoid the area around the Dorpstraat. And also in many other places it was advised to stay indoors “if you can”. The Brabant-Zuidoost Safety Region warned on Sunday evening about dangerous situations due to heavy rain showers, such as manhole covers that can wash away due to the abundance of water. “Be aware of this when you go outside,” it said.

Limburg also has to deal with flooding. Images on social media showed on Sunday how streets in, among others, Echt and Roermond were flooded.

Rijkswaterstaat reported on Sunday evening that the rain is also causing problems on several highways in North Brabant and Limburg. In some cases, lanes are closed, such as on the A2 towards Eindhoven near Sint Joost. More generally, Rijkswaterstaat warns against aquaplaning and advises to moderate driving speed and to keep a sufficient distance from other road users.

There will also be showers over the country on Monday. As much precipitation as fell on Sunday is not expected. But regionally it can still get quite wet again.

According to Weeronline, the chance that it will be the wettest Pentecost ever is “not very high”. That record stands on June 13, 2011. Then a total of 58.9 millimeters fell in De Bilt over both Pentecost days.
