‘Nurses must become more empowered’

Amsterdam – Applying plasters unnecessarily, soaking wounds, replacing catheters; in many hospitals, nurses still perform actions that have not been proven to be effective, cost money and are sometimes unnecessarily burdensome for patients. V&VN, the professional association for nurses and carers and the Care Evaluation and Appropriate Use program are trying to tackle this with the Kwalitijd project. Engaged professor of Nursing Science Hester Vermeulen knows: “In practice, it sometimes proves difficult to let go of existing routines.”
