Wayne Rooney – who was praised by Gerrard in the same conversation as the best player he had played with in the national team – is displeased with the former midfielder’s statements.

“To say that the current selection has a better attitude is disrespectful to us,” Rooney said in his own BBCpodcast The Wayne Rooney Show. “Because we worked hard and did our best. We just didn’t quite succeed. Could we have performed better? Yes, that could have been the case, but it wasn’t meant to be.”

Cultural difference

Rooney also sees a cultural difference between the generations of the past and present. “Before the season, some players from Manchester United and Manchester City train together, Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden for example,” said the former Manchester United striker. It used to be difficult to build such a bond, especially between players from Manchester United and Liverpool.”

“It was clear that Becks (David Beckham, ed.), Gary Neville and Scholesy (Paul Scholes, ed.) wouldn’t really get close to the Liverpool players. But one thing is certain: everyone worked hard for each other. So I don’t think that was a problem. We just haven’t been able to get prices across the line.”
