Steve Jordan will play drums on the Rolling Stones’ new album, Keith Richard has now confirmed.
After Watts’ Death: A Half-Completed Album
After drummer Charlie Watts fell seriously ill last year and was only out for a while, Steve Jordan replaced him, believing he would soon hand the drumsticks back to his colleague. But everything changed for Jordan with Watts’ death – and the 65-year-old became the drummer’s permanent live successor.
Now guitarist Keith Richards commented on the rumors that Watts could have finished work on the new Rolling Stones record before his death: “We have some of Charlie Watts from the time when he was still able to do it.” According to Richards, however, the recordings were not complete. “We were halfway through finishing the album when he died,” he explains.
Therefore, if the band wants to continue recording, a drummer is needed, Richards continued: “And that will be Steve Jordan.”
“I can’t do this without Charlie”
At the same time, Richards recalls reluctantly at first to go on tour without Watts. “I can’t do this without Charlie,” was his attitude at the time. But this would have convinced him of the idea of trying it with Jordan. “He can take my place at any time,” Watts would have reassured his bandmates and persuaded him to start the tour.
Richards recently announced that he was working on new songs with Mick Jagger in Jamaica. Steve Jordan was also involved and had already changed the dynamics of the band in such a way that the songwriting tempo had increased quite a bit. On the upcoming tour in summer 2022, the Stones will also be seen in Germany with their new line-up.
