Cornerback Stephon Gilmore is retiring. The 2019 Defensive Player of the Year announced this move on social media on Thursday.

“To the fans: Thank you for your support. I’ve had 13 incredible years in the league and can’t wait to see what the next chapter has in store,” Gilmore said via Instagram.

The two-time All-Pro cornerback retires with career totals of 180 NFL games and 32 interceptions. Gilmore was last active for the Minnesota Vikings in 2024; last season he did not receive a new contract in the league in free agency.

The 35-year-old came to the NFL in 2012 as a tenth first-round pick to the Buffalo Bills. After five seasons, he made his first move within the league to the New England Patriots, where he would have his most successful time. With the Pats he became Super Bowl winner in 2019 and in the same year he was the NFL’s best defensive player and co-leader in interceptions (6).

In 2021, Gilmore moved on to the Carolina Panthers before the five-time Pro Bowler played one season each for the Indianapolis Colts, Dallas Cowboys and the Vikings in the following years.

“From my first game with the Finley Road Falcons to two Super Bowls, multiple Pro Bowls and the Defensive Player of the Year award, you have [der Football] taught me the priceless lesson of working hard and believing in myself,” said Gilmore.
