Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz congratulated the German handball players on their strong World Cup.

“Congratulations on this excellent tournament result! There was a bit of luck missing in the last game of the tournament, but you fought until the last second and showed what you were made of. We are proud of you,” Steinmeier wrote on Instagram shortly after the narrowly lost final against Norway (20:23).

Merz also expressed his appreciation. “Excitement until the last minute. Even if they couldn’t reward themselves with the title: our handball players impressed at this World Cup. Congratulations on this silver medal. Thank you for passion, solidarity and strong performances,” wrote the Chancellor.

By winning silver, the DHB selection celebrated its greatest success on Sunday in Rotterdam since the last World Cup gold in Oslo 32 years ago. Germany won their last medal at a World Championships when they won bronze in 2007.
