Statement of the day | Now is the time to make healthy eating cheaper

For many people, living healthier is one of the New Year’s resolutions. This can be difficult for Dutch people with a small wallet: after all, healthy food is more expensive. What do you think, should healthy products in the supermarket become cheaper? Let us know.

“It will be a tough year in terms of health,” estimates Jochen Mierau of the University of Groningen and the UMCG, who studies health differences between the Dutch. “Stirring or cooking has become a real question, especially for Dutch people who have little financial room to spare. Then, for example, opting for cheaper, unhealthier food is one of the ways to make ends meet.”

This would be the perfect time to make healthy eating cheaper, for example by lowering VAT on fruit and vegetables, Mierau believes. “But that doesn’t seem likely to happen, because politics and interest groups are slowing things down. It is to become cynical.”

Do you agree with him and should the VAT on fruit and vegetables be lowered? Or do you have another solution? Participate in the statement of the day.
