Statement of the day | New music center Groningen can easily be twice as expensive as Forum

The costs for the new music center to be built, the Nieuwe Poort, already exceed 300 million euros. This would make the building more than twice as expensive as Forum Groningen, which costs 140 million. Is that an allowed amount?

The music center must replace the current Oosterpoort. That building has seen its best days and renovating it has never really been an option for the municipality. The preferred location of the new building is behind the Main Station. The municipality looked at 15 locations for new construction, with the Station area coming out best.

Earlier this week it became clear that construction costs are rising considerably. Previous estimates did not include the construction of the parking garage. “It costs a lot of money, which means the plan will cost more than 300 million euros anyway,” says councilor Rik van Niejenhuis.

Forum Groningen cost 140 million

The Forum Groningen is probably the most discussed building in the city. Construction was initially expected to cost 70 million euros, but rose to double that amount.

The costs rose enormously, especially due to making the building earthquake-resistant. Delays also meant that millions more were needed.

Forgot parking garage in estimation

Earlier this week, Van Niejenhuis responded with his comment about the parking garage to rumors that the investment for the Nieuwe Poort now amounts to 380 million euros. He has not heard that amount. He expects the results of the research the municipality is conducting into four major projects that are in the pipeline before the end of the month: the Nieuwe Poort, Kardinge, Martiniplaza and Museum aan de A. “You can only spend your money once.” ”, said Van Niejenhuis.
