State of emergency must get Canadian truckers in line: fines up to 70,000 euros, prison sentence or lost work | Abroad

It must be “crystal clear” that it is illegal and punishable to block and hinder the movement of goods on critical infrastructure, said county governor Doug Ford. “We will take all necessary steps to ensure that the bridge reopens.”

The truckers with their so-called freedom convoy have been blocking the Ambassador Bridge on the important trade route between Ontario and the US state of Michigan since Monday. The blockade causes problems, especially in the car industry, because the supply of parts comes to a standstill. Actions are also being taken at two other border crossings.

The Canadian government previously called the action illegal and called on the truckers to end their blockades. The US authorities have called for action. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised “quick action to enforce the law,” in a telephone conversation with his American colleague Joe Biden on Friday. Trudeau said separately that “everything is on the table because this illegal activity has to stop and will stop.” The two leaders will remain in contact in the coming days with a view to a smooth recovery of the free movement of goods.

Arrests

In the capital Ottawa, truckers have been protesting for nearly two weeks, although their numbers are dwindling. A state of emergency has also been declared there. 25 arrests have been made. The police will be reinforced next weekend because more protests may be coming. Protests are also raging in Toronto, Ontario’s capital, as well as in other parts of the country.
