State Department rejected Russia’s call to withdraw nuclear weapons from NATO countries – RBK

Russian calls for the withdrawal of American nuclear weapons from Europe are problematic. About this, as reports TASS, said a spokesman for the State Department at a special briefing on the upcoming trip of First Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman to Switzerland and Belgium, during which she will take part in negotiations on strategic stability.

“In the past, we made it clear to Russia that they (calls. – RBK) are really problematic for the United States, and we stated that as long as nuclear weapons exist, NATO will remain an alliance with nuclear weapons, ”the State Department said.

State Department denied reports of plans to withdraw troops from Eastern Europe

In mid-December, Moscow submitted proposals on security guarantees to the United States. Among them, in addition to reducing nuclear weapons in Europe, there was a demand not to admit post-Soviet republics to NATO. Putin allowed “very different” Russian reactions if these proposals were rejected.

The talks between Russia and the United States will take place on January 10. The Russian delegation will be headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov. The parties will discuss arms control, Russian security proposals and the situation in Ukraine. Later on January 12, negotiations between Russia and NATO will take place.
