Starting signal at the exhibition in Munich

What stars wear on the red carpet is something their fans can usually only dream of. In Munich you can now admire spectacular evening gowns up close.

Madonna, Lady Gaga and Cardi B – they have all worn gowns by fashion designers Viktor & Rolf. Now people beyond the glamor world of stars can also admire the Dutch creations up close – in the exhibition ‘Viktor & Rolf. Fashion Statements’.

“Exhibitions are more democratic than the catwalk. More people can take part in it and it lasts longer,” said the artists on Thursday in the Kunsthalle Munich.

From Friday to October 6th, the Kunsthalle says it will show around 100 pieces by the fashion designers, whose works are often playful with delicate, fluffy tulle, but also often convey tough messages. ‘I’m not shy. I just don’t like you’ is written on a far-swinging dream in white. Soft pastel tones from white to pink to light blue are mixed with strong splashes of color, such as a black skull on dark yellow or a bright red inscription: ‘Trust Me – I’m a Liar’ (Trust me, I’m a liar).

“Viktor & Rolf are known for their experimental and conceptual fashion shows and performances, their exquisite craftsmanship, their innovative and dreamy silhouettes,” says exhibition curator Thierry-Maxime Loriot. Videos, sketches and works by artists such as the photographer Ellen von Unwerth and Andreas Gursky complement the show. According to the organizers, it is the first retrospective for the artist duo in German-speaking countries. Much comes from the artists’ archives, but some also comes from private collections and is now being exhibited for the first time. (dpa)
