Sandro Wagner stands as a coach in front of his Bundesliga debut. In the past few weeks, he has spoken in detail about himself, his goals and strategy. But what can the football world really expect with Wagner’s FC Augsburg?
The Wagner era at FC Augsburg is still young. Since July 2025, the 37-year-old has had the reins with the Bundesliga club. With his commitment, the Swabian succeeded in the biggest coup in summer-a step away from the gray-mouse image
Wagner has given many interviews since taking office – press conferences, podcasts, TV interviews. No other Bundesliga coach was so great. Wagner spoke about his origin (“I am an assi”), his impatience – and that he sucks his car every day. On Saturday, however, there is an end to question-answer game: Then Wagner has to be a coach in the Bundesliga at SC Freiburg (Saturday, 3:30 p.m. in the radio portage) prove.
Wagner’s previous path
A day on which the 37-year-old looked forward to it: “It was clear to me at the latest when I was in her mid-20s that I wanted to be a coach,” he said “Phrasenmäher” in the picture podcast. He had started his player career at Bayern Munich. The first coaching station was the SpVgg Unterhaching. Before Augsburg he was co-coach of national coach Julian Nagelsmann. “I am much, much more suitable for the coaching job than for the player,” said Wagner in the podcast.
Wagner Prerequisites
What Wagner could help to do: Apart from his person, it is only individual screws where the club has re -turned. The squad is practically the same as in the previous season. Especially with the top performers, none left the club in summer. There are also no rumors that the squad could still change until September. In addition to Wagner himself, Han -Noah Massengo has also managed a transfer success – the Frenchman should give the Swabian stability in midfield.
Wagner’s plan for the goal
If you look at the preparation and the cup duel against the Halleschen FC (2-0)you can see how high Wagner plans to play. Goalkeeper Finn Dahmen is likely to have an even bigger and more important task. The 27-year-old will have to support the game.
A role that could be Dahmen, after all, he is considered a modern, strong goalkeeper. At 1.86 meters, he is not necessarily one of the largest keepers, but is “more flexible and faster”, as he explained in the past season.
Wagner’s sense of order and structure
These insights show that Wagner not only could take a change on the lawn: At the training area there is now a huge video wall in Augsburg, the coache moved into a different office, away from the cabin, where the players should “have their freedom”.
Because the bicycles on the training ground “criss -cross” stood, he had bicycle stand installed: “If I don’t care how I turn the bicycles there, how can I play football in a structured manner?” In any case, on Saturday it goes to Freiburg. Wagner promised: “We want to surprise, we want to attack.”
Wagner’s plan for the game against Freiburg
In any case, he was not nervous, as he explained at the press conference on Thursday: “I already got down here, played on the left and shot four times in the Bundesliga.” In any case, he tackles the game in Freiburg “with the highest respect”: “It will be a board.”
For this board, however, Elvis Rexhbecaj can take part again after surviving knee problems, as well as Arne Maier after a short illness. Alexis Claude-Maurice, on the other hand, will be missing because, according to Wagner, he still has “foot aua”.
When the Frenchman recovers from his ankle extension is not yet clear, but the trainer assures: “We have great boys who catch this in their own way.” In Freiburg, too, the FCA is again likely to compete with a double top from Steve Mounié and Phillipp Tietz. “We thought about something,” Wagner assures without going into detail.
