Paul Morel of Stadsherstel saw the damage to the church for the first time this morning. “It was really terrible to see,” he says. Yet Morel is also hopeful, because more has survived than he initially expected. “We can continue to build on that.”

Original state?

The question remains how the building will be rebuilt. There are several options for this. “The church can be restored to its original state,” says Morel, who is not sure whether that will happen.

This is not just about Urban Restoration, Monuments Archaeology, the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands, the people of the Environmental Quality Committee and a new architect are also involved in the plan that is yet to be formed.

Money

It is clear that the restoration of the church will cost a lot of money. Several fundraising campaigns have already been started, including that of the foundation Heart for the Vondelpark and that of the Liberty Churchwho held two church services every Sunday in the building.

“Yes, when you see it, it hurts your heart,” says initiator Michiel Aulbers. “We have already received several donations and it is really impressive to see the involvement of the people of Amsterdam,” he says proudly. Paul Morel of Stadsherstel is also happy with the various actions. He will soon be talking to everyone involved.
