Stadium ban for Tottenham fan who mocks Hillsborough disaster: ‘Criminal behaviour’ | Foreign football

Tottenham Hotspur supporters have been banned from stadiums nationwide for three years. Kieron Darlow, 25, has been sentenced for mocking the 1989 Hillsborough disaster during the Liverpool vs Tottenham game on April 30.

“Darlow admitted that he had made a gesture to the Liverpool fans and that it was a reference to the Hillsborough disaster,” said Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) chief prosecutor Andrew Page. He admitted that this was to suggest that fans without tickets had moved forward in the trade at the time and were partly responsible for the disaster that led to so many deaths. He admitted that his intention was for the Liverpool fans to see this and it would intimidate and cause them distress. This kind of behavior is not only morally unacceptable, it is also criminal.”

At the start of a Liverpool cup match against Nottingham Forest, at the packed Sheffield Wednesday stadium, panic broke out in the stands on April 15, 1989 and many Liverpool fans were trampled. Of these, 94 died on the spot, one died a few days later in a hospital and another in 1993.

“We hope that this sanction sends a signal to all football fans that their behavior during football matches matters. And if it turns into crime, they will be punished,” Page said.
