Fred Kerley didn’t cause a stir on Thursday through sports. He is said to have behaved “aggressively” at a crime scene – the police reacted to this.
At the Olympic Games in Paris, the American Fred Kerley won the bronze medal in the 100 meter sprint. Almost six months later, the former sprint world champion is attracting attention outside of sport. The 29-year-old was first stunned with a stun gun and then arrested after an incident with police in Miami.
According to local authorities, the incident occurred when Kerley attempted to gain access to a cordoned-off investigation area near a crime scene in South Beach. Police said Kerley wanted to inquire about his vehicle, which was parked not far from the crime scene. According to police, he behaved “aggressively” and ignored repeated requests to retreat.
A scuffle ensued in which several officers allegedly tried to subdue him. According to police, officers eventually used a stun gun after Kerley continued to resist. Previously, four officers allegedly tried to bring him under control by hitting him on the head, chest and back.
Fred Kerley was charged with resisting arrest without use of force, assault on an officer and disorderly conduct. He was taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center to be evaluated for his injuries. According to television station Local 10 WPLG, Kerley appeared in court on Friday afternoon.
His lawyer, Yale Sanford, described the incident as a “misunderstanding”. He criticized the police’s actions and emphasized that Kerley was a “model citizen.” The lawyer spoke of an “overreaction” by the authorities.
