Despite numerous injuries, Lisa Mayer celebrated many successes. The World Athletics World Cup in Tokyo will be your last competition.
With the 4×100 meter relay, Lisa Mayer won bronze at the Olympic Games in Paris last year. The German sprinter will also be there at the World Athletics Championship in Tokyo (from September 13th) and then end her career. She announced this in an Instagram video.
“I had a lot of injuries and kept fighting back. But that’s exactly what I asked and shaped me. I look back with deep gratitude and pride in this time,” said Mayer in the video.
Then she added: “In the past few months I have noticed that this fire no longer burns as brightly as it was or what it should be. I am ready for something new.” Therefore, she will leave her heart on the track in Tokyo at the World Cup and enjoy the last competition. “For me,” Mayer completed her statement.
In an interview with “Sport 1”, Mayer also explained: “I felt it all the season in training and in competitions. In the beginning I couldn’t classify it properly, but at some point everything has put together.” Her loved ones also reacted well: “I communicated the decision to my environment, and everyone has confirmed that I have transmitted it with a smile. Since then I have been doing very well – it is as if a load has been done from me.”
Several German athletes commented on Mayer’s post. Sprinter Gina Lückenkemper wrote: “proud to have been your whole career at your side.” Medium -distance runner Karl Bebendorf emphasized: “You will be missing from German athletics.” Speer throwing star Julian Weber commented: “What an honor with you to leave your heart on track again.” Sprint colleague Alexandra Burghardt also wrote: “Only the best for your last dance.”
