Minister Conny Helder for Long-term Care and Sport will visit the World Cup football that will take place from 20 July to 20 August 2023 in Australia and New Zealand. As usual, the Minister for Sport is present at a group match of the Dutch national team. On Thursday, July 27, she will visit the match against the current world champion, the United States. The match of the Dutch national team will be played in Wellington.
2027 World Cup bid
Ten years after the European championship in the Netherlands, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany now want to jointly organize the World Cup in 2027. The five Dutch host cities Amsterdam (Johan Cruijf ArenA), Rotterdam (De Kuip), Eindhoven (Philips Stadium), Enschede (Grolsch Veste) and Heerenveen (Abe Lenstra Stadium) have registered at the beginning of July. In the context of the World Cup bid, Minister Conny Helder is holding talks with the New Zealand and Australian sports ministers and also with FIFA. Gender equality is an important theme in the prayer for the three countries. The 2027 World Cup should become the example of how women can occupy an equal position in sport: whether as a player, coach, referee or director. The bid must be submitted by December 8, 2023. FIFA will vote in May 2024 on the allocation of the 2027 World Cup.
Minister Conny Helder: “It would be fantastic if we could organize the World Cup in 2027 together with Belgium and Germany. It is a great way to put sport and especially women’s football even more on the map in the Netherlands. From the stands I will of course wholeheartedly encourage our Orange Lionesses in the match against the United States. I wish them every success in this way in the first game against Portugal.”
Socially safe sport
Part of the working visit is knowledge exchange with the Sports Integrity Australia (SIA) in Canberra (Australia) on integrity and safety in sport. This successful example is being followed in the development of an independent integrity center for safe sport in the Netherlands. Where athletes can go to report and follow up on reports in the field of transgressive behaviour, doping and match fixing.
Elderly care
In addition to sports, the minister will also make a number of visits in the context of long-term health care. At various care organizations, she monitors their renewed approach to the range of housing and care for the elderly. She will also visit the Dutch care community ‘Ons Dorp’ in Auckland, to exchange knowledge about alternative methods in district nursing for people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
