Sports economist Christoph Breuer has noticed lower transfer activity during the corona pandemic, but sees no long-term changes.

“One must not assume that the football officials have come to their senses because the transfer fees are now lower,” said the scientist from the University of Cologne of the “WAZ”. “Professional football is a rat race. The arms race in players and coaches will continue when the pandemic is over.”

Most of the money also flowed into the English Premier League in the transfer period that just ended. This has “set itself apart from the other European leagues in recent years,” said Breuer, particularly due to the media revenues from national marketing. “This trend is becoming clear again now.”
