Sports boss Simon Rolfes on Liverpool rumors

In addition to Xabi Alonso, Liverpool FC is now also said to be interested in Leverkusen’s sports director Simon Rolfes. He denies it quite clearly.

Sports director Simon Rolfes from Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen has clearly denied rumors of a possible move to Liverpool FC. “The fact that there is a lot of speculation about the protagonists of Bayer 04 due to our current successes is part of the business,” he told the “Kicker”: “But that doesn’t change my direction. It’s not without reason that I only extended my contract in the autumn. I am absolutely happy in Leverkusen in this constellation.”

Rolfes inherited Völler in 2022

Rolfes had only extended his contract in Leverkusen until 2028 two and a half months ago. As a professional, he played 377 competitive games for Leverkusen and was captain for many years. In 2018 he returned as an official, initially as head of youth and development, then as sports director. In July 2022, he became managing director as the successor to current DFB sports director Rudi Völler.

The “Football Insider” portal, citing “well-informed sources”, reported that Liverpool were planning to sign Leverkusen’s successful duo Xabi Alonso and Rolfes in the summer. They are the favorites to succeed the outgoing Jürgen Klopp and ex-sports director Jörg Schmadtke.
