Max Eberl has been a sports director at Bayern for a year. The 51 -year -old had to solve some difficult tasks – and still has heavy chunks in front of him.

Max Eberl has been the sports director of FC Bayern for a year. He describes this time as “very exciting and intense”. Because behind the 51-year-old is not an easy year: coaching search, contract negotiations with important players and the realignment of the record champion stood and continued on his to-do list.

Eberl’s new job starts with a “curious” search for trainers

Right at the beginning of his new work, the entire negotiation skills of the native of Lower Bavaria was challenged. FC Bayern – once again – needed a new trainer. Until April, Eberl wanted to present a successor to Thomas Tuchel. However, it was hailing Prominent cancellationfor example by Julian Nagelsmann or Ralf Rangnick. At the end of May. For many surprisingly, FC Bayern presented Vincent Kompany an internationally inexperienced coach to remain at Bayern for the next few years.

Eberl about Kompany: “Have found great trainers”

Because Eberl’s agreed goal when he took office was to ensure more continuity on this coaching post – Kompany has been the eighth coach since the end of the Guardiola era in 2016. “We could have spared one or the other turn,” says Eberl self -critically. But: “At the long end it went well for us. We found a great trainer.”

Hoeneß: FC Bayern should “be measure of all things again”

But the upheaval was not done. Eberl was fetched to provide new impulses. FC Bayern is also said to be the measure of all things again with a view to the European Cup in two or three years, “as honorary president Uli Hoeneß demanded almost a year ago.

And that only works with a wide squad. However, according to media reports, Eberl received a savings course from the Supervisory Board. Excessive player salaries that his predecessor Hasan Salihamidžić had admitted to almost every new addition should be a thing of the past. This did not make the contract negotiations with players whose contracts expire at the end of the season.

Eberl’s biggest coup to date: Young star Musiala stays with FCB

Nevertheless, he managed Tie Jamal Musiala to the club in the long term And “to shape a new era at Bayern”, as Eberl said in “Blickpunkt Sport” at the end of the year. The 22-year-old’s contract extension is certainly the greatest success so far. Also Alphonso Davies and Manuel Neuer Stay on with the record champions. Eberl remarked with young star Musiala and the Canadian Davies – that is why he could not pursue the desired austerity course with these personal details.

Eberl’s biggest problem: Kimmichs Contract extension

But a large construction site remains: Joshua Kimmich’s working paper expires at the end of the season. The midfield director, who has been playing an outstanding season under Kompany, has lucrative offers from abroad. Eberl and the club want to hold the 30-year-old, see him as a new captain. But Kimmich has not yet decided. In the meantime, the association is said to have withdrawn the contract offer.

FCB threatens to lose millions if Kimmich should leave the association free of charge. Eberl had recently shown himself hopeful: “We know exactly what we want, Josh knows what we want. Now I hope that we can do it through the finish line.” It is not the only construction site that Eberl still has to close around his one year. The contracts by Icon Thomas Müller, Leroy Sané and Eric Dier are also running out.

New additions Olise & Co. – “New Energy” for the squad

In addition, according to the many transfer flops of his predecessor Salihamidžić, Eberl should again bring players to FCB who bring the squad “new energy”, refresh the team. So far, there was no radical break.

Wing player Michael Olise came from Crystal Palace for 53 million euros and mostly played convincingly. The Frenchman is an access, “that of the Bundesliga very good,” said Eberl. João Palhinha, switched to Isar (51 million) in the summer, but has so far – also due to injuries – have not been able to set any accents. It remains to be seen whether his playing style fits the ideas of Kompany in the long term.

Here, too, a financial loss threatens with the possible sale of the 29-year-old. Defender Hiroki ITō changed from VfB Stuttgart to the record champion for 23.5 million euros, was seriously injured during the season preparation and recently gave his comeback.

FCB was able to serve the services of Tom Bishop secure. The 19-year-old comes from TSG Hoffenheim and is considered one of the largest German talents in German football. The midfielder is reminiscent of Kimmich in his game structure and also plays unusual but successful passports.

Eberl: “I’m here to collect titles”

The squad planning also depends on how Eberl’s work is evaluated after the titleless pre -season. Because a year ago the sports director said: “I am here to collect titles.” In the DFB Cup was in the round of 16 against the new big rival Bayer Leverkusen Ending. But Eberl is now confident: “We are leaders, are in the Champions League. The season is a good one, but you will only see what will come around at the end.”
