Eredivisie match SC Cambuur – PEC Zwolle early
5:06 PM: The match in the Eredivisie between SC Cambuur and PEC Zwolle on Saturday, February 12, scheduled for 9 p.m., will be brought forward to 6:45 p.m. This has been announced by the KNVB. This will allow the stadium to be filled to a third of its capacity, according to current government measures against the spread of the coronavirus.
Former international Serge Rink new technical director of handball association
4.21 pm: The Dutch Handball Association (NHV) has appointed Serge Rink as its new technical director. Rink is the successor of Sjors Röttger who retired on December 1 last year. Röttger will still train his successor, who will start his job on March 7, the union reports.
Rink (45) played for HV Aalsmeer for many years and won several trophies. As an international he also played for the Dutch men’s team. Rink sees his appointment as a great challenge. “I think it’s great to be able to give something back to the handball sport in this way and to take my experiences with athletes and talents. My goal is to facilitate people to allow them to excel. I want to achieve this ambition together with the athletes , coaches, trainers and all other stakeholders.”
Jaap Wals, general manager NHV is looking forward to the arrival of Rink. “He has a personality that fits well with this position; a connector who is looking for collaboration. He also knows what it takes to practice top sport at the highest level and what preconditions are needed to facilitate top sport and talent development as optimally as possible. I am convinced that he can continue to develop the top sports program within the NHV.”
‘Super World Cup’ cycling 2023 in Glasgow lasts a week and a half
2:45 pm: The first world championship in which almost all cycling disciplines will be completed in one location will start on August 3, 2023 in Glasgow and will last a week and a half. David Lappartient, president of the UCI International Cycling Union, called the announcement of the dates a milestone. “To bring our world championships together in one location and at one time every four years was one of my missions before I was elected president,” the Frenchman said during an online press conference.
The World Championships in thirteen cycling disciplines, including road cycling, track cycling, BMX and mountain biking, will last until August 13. It was previously known that the ‘Super World Cup’ would take place in and around Glasgow. The Scottish city has already hosted a number of combined European Championships in 2018, including swimming, cycling and gymnastics.
Paul Bush, chairman of the organizing committee, speaks of the “biggest cycling event ever” where more than 8,000 amateur and professional cyclists from at least 120 countries are expected. “We are proud that our roads and accommodations are being used to make cycling history,” said Bush, who also expects more than a million spectators.
All Bundesliga clubs are allowed to admit a maximum of 10,000 fans
2:39 p.m.: Bundesliga clubs will soon be able to play football again for up to 10,000 spectators. A maximum of 4000 fans will soon be allowed in Germany for sports competitions that do not take place outdoors.
These rules will apply to all federal states in Germany, but have yet to be added to the corona legislation. The federal states had already agreed last week to equalize the number of spectators at sports competitions before 9 February.
In recent weeks, different rules have been in force in many German federal states. In Bavaria, 10,000 fans were already welcome at matches in the Bundesliga, but only 750 in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Seven Dutch judokas to Paris
13:38: The Dutch team for the prestigious judo tournament in Paris this weekend consists of two men and five women. Michael Korrel and Simeon Catharina compete in the class up to 100 kilograms.
Sanne Vermeer and Geke van den Berg (-63 kg), Hilde Jager (-70 kg), Natascha Ausma and Yael van Heemst (-78 kg) also appear on the tatami in the capital of France.
Korrel won the Paris tournament in 2018. Catharina and Jager took bronze last year. Vermeer won a medal at all tournaments in which she participated last year.
Handball player Baijens back in Bundesliga at HSV Hamburg
12:44 pm: Handball international Dani Baijens will return to the highest level in Germany next summer. The 23-year-old handball player has signed a two-year contract with HSV Hamburg, the Bundesliga club reports. Baijens is still active for the German second division team ASV Hamm-Westfalen. He impressed at the European Championship where the Orange finished tenth.
Baijens previously also played in the Bundesliga on behalf of TBV Lemgo Lippe and SG Flensburg-Handewitt. For the latter club he already made minutes in the Champions League. „I played with Flensburg against Hamburg before and I was already enthusiastic about this club. I am looking forward to playing handball here from next summer,” he says on the HSV website. There was also interest in Baijens from other countries, who has scored 69 goals so far this season at ASV Hamm-Westfalen in seventeen appearances. He scored 36 times for the Dutch team at the European Championship.
WADA does not yet make a decision on the end of Russia’s doping suspension
11.19 am: Russia should not assume that all sanctions imposed for carrying out a state-sponsored doping program will be automatically lifted when the suspension ends at the end of this year. That says chairman Witold Banka of the global anti-doping agency WADA.
“The rules are clear,” says Banka. “Russia also has to adhere to the rules, requirements and standards. Until now they do. We are in close contact with them. They strictly follow our rules, but this is an ongoing process. We have to decide on that later this year.”
Russia is participating in the Winter Games in Beijing under a neutral flag for the third Games in a row. The Russian national anthem will not be played after medals are awarded. The Russian participants in the Winter Games are also not allowed to display national symbols, such as the tricolor flag.
Russia’s doping ban ends on December 16.
WADA is confident that doping controls during the upcoming Games in China will be fair. Director Olivier Niggli expects his organization to have learned from the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, when Russians exchanged doping samples in official labs to mask doping practices. “We now have observers in the labs and a new supplier for the vials,” Niggli said.
The director of WADA also said that Olympic doping samples are stored for ten years, for possible retesting with new techniques. The samples from the previous 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang have not yet been re-examined, but that will certainly happen, according to Niggli. “We will do that when the time is right and better testing methods are available.”
Three important sponsors at least three more years at PSV
10.10 am: Sponsors ASML, Jumbo Supermarkets and VDL Groep have committed themselves to PSV for at least another three years. “We will continue to make the region even stronger,” PSV general manager Toon Gerbrands said.
ASML, Jumbo and VDL are part of a group of companies from the Brainport Eindhoven Metropolitan Area, which has been PSV’s shirt sponsor since 2019. The club from Eindhoven will not announce what the new deal will yield.
“The collaboration between these top companies and PSV is seen by many as the ultimate example of how we conquer the world together as one region,” says director Gerbrands. “Research has already shown that Brainport Eindhoven is increasingly known as an attractive living, working and living environment. That makes us proud.”
Philips, Swinkels Family Brewers (Bavaria) and High Tech Campus Eindhoven are for the time being PSV’s other partners in the Brainport Eindhoven Metropolitan Area. Cleaning company CSU will be added next season, for a period of 5 years.
PSV reports that High Tech Campus Eindhoven will have a different role as a lender. High Tech Campus Eindhoven will be the main sponsor of the PSV women for at least two years from next season.
Phoenix Suns celebrate 11th consecutive NBA win
7:18 am: The Phoenix Suns basketball players have their 11th consecutive NBA win. They were also too strong for Brooklyn Nets (1211-111).
Devin Booker scored a whopping 35 points for the western division leader.
Chicago Bulls, the leaders of the Eastern Division, beat Orlando Magic (126-115). DeMar DeRozan was the big star at Chicago with 29 points and 10 rebounds.
