Speed skater Bart Vreugdenhil breaks old world hour record on natural ice

Marathon skater Bart Vreugdenhil from Amsterdam has broken the world hour record on natural ice. In Winterswijk he came to a distance of 36 kilometers and 717 meters.

The old world hour record was from 1949 and was held by the Norwegian Marius Strijbis with a distance of 32.660 kilometers. Initially, the record was attributed to the Frenchman Léon Quaglia, but his attempt in 1928 turned out not to have been officially recognized.
