BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – Bärbel Bas and Lars Klingbeil want to remain SPD chairmen even after the election debacle in Rhineland-Palatinate. “We will not plunge the second largest government party into chaos and enter into a process where we focus on ourselves and do not care about the country,” said Vice Chancellor Klingbeil in Berlin. Bas said it was important not to paralyze the country with personnel debates in the current situation.

Neither of them would have resigned in the executive committee, but would have offered an open debate about their positions. The conclusion was that we now had to talk about how to move the country forward. “And it makes no sense to spend weeks dismantling ourselves over personnel,” said Bas. On Friday, the party leadership wants to meet with the parliamentary group leadership, the SPD ministers and successful mayors to draw up a reform plan for the next few weeks and the negotiations at the federal level./tam/DP/men
