Spanish writer Javier Marías (70) passed away

Spanish writer Javier Marías died on Sunday at the age of 70. He is considered one of the most important and successful contemporary writers in his country. His well-known works include All Souls, A Heart So White and Remember me on the battlefield tomorrow.

More than 9 million copies of Marías’ books have been sold worldwide. These were translated into 46 languages, including Dutch. His sixteenth novel was published last year. That book is titled Tomás Nevinson.

His publisher has announced that the writer died in Madrid after contracting pneumonia weeks ago. According to the Spanish newspaper El Mundo, the pneumonia was the result of a corona infection and he had been in hospital for months.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez speaks of a “sad day” for Spanish literature as “one of the great writers of our time” has passed away. His immense and talented work will always be a fundamental part of our literature.
