Spain hasn’t won in fifty years, nobody wants to be second and more facts | NOW

With 66 years of history and more than fifty countries that have already participated, the Eurovision Song Contest is a gold mine of facts and statistics. On the day of the grand final, NU.nl lists facts about all countries that will participate tonight.

That we Czech Republic To be found in the final tonight is quite a special occasion. The country, which first participated in 2007 but also missed many years, has only reached the final battle four times out of ten participations. The highest position ever was Mikolas Josef’s sixth place in 2018.

Romania had one of the most impressive series at the Eurovision Song Contest at the beginning of this century. Since the introduction of the semi-finals (these became two semi-finals in 2008), the country only missed the final battle for the first time in 2018 (in addition to the disqualification in 2016). We haven’t seen the Romanians in the final since 2018, until this year, when WRS has qualified. By the way, a win for Romania this year seems far away: llamame has been given starting position two, also known as ‘the death slot’. Never before has someone who was second in the final won.

Portugal won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2017 with Salvador Sobral and last year in Rotterdam The Black Mamba finished in a respectable twelfth place. But the country has also known less Eurovision times. The final was not reached from 2004 to 2007 and from 2011 to 2015.

In Finland the Eurovision success does not come easily. The country has only made the top ten twice since the early 1990s. In 2006 the country won with the band Lordi and last year it took sixth place with Blind Channel. Both top ten results were therefore achieved with a rock band. Perhaps The Rasmus will also make a contribution this year.

Switzerland scored extremely well in the past two editions with a third and fourth place for Gjon’s Tears and Luca Hänni. In the ten years before, however, the country only made it to the final twice, one of which also resulted in last place in the final.

France has been there since the beginning in the fifties and has already won the Eurovision Song Contest five times. However, the last victory dates back to 1977. Last year the French came close with a second place Voila by Barbara Pravi.

Norway has the dubious honor of being the country that finished last most often. That happened no less than eleven times. Four times, the Norwegians even got no points at all, a record they can share with Austria.

Many countries can only dream of the flashy start that Armenia had. In the first five participations, the country made it to the top ten each time. In recent years it has been a bit less. The Armenians are in the final again this year for the first time since 2017.

Italy is going like a train since the country decided to return to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2011. Only twice have they fallen outside the top ten and with a win (2021), two second places (2011 and 2019) and a third place (2015) they are not out of the top of the scoreboard.

It’s about time that Spain wins the Eurovision Song Contest again. It has been more than fifty years since the last victory in 1969. The last time the country did not end up at the bottom was in 2014. Then the top ten was reached again.

The Netherlands has won the Eurovision Song Contest five times, but on the other hand, we also finished last five times. The last time was in the semifinal of 2011 with the 3JS. It is hoped that S10 will bring a sixth win and not a last place.

Ukraine has only competed since 2003, but has since made the top three five times. Among them were two resounding victories: in 2004 and 2016.

Germany seems to have completely lost its spin at the Eurovision Song Contest. After Lena’s victory in 2010, two more top ten finishes immediately followed, but since then almost only last and almost last places have been ‘scored’.

Lithuania has already participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 22 times, but has never reached the top five. The best result of the Baltic state is sixth place from 2006. Last year they came close with eighth place for The Roop.

Azerbaijan almost had a subscription to the top five in the first years of participation. That subscription was temporarily discontinued in 2014. Since then, the country has only been in the top ten once (2019).

Our southern neighbors from Belgium Just like the Netherlands, there was a period at the beginning of this century in which the final of the Eurovision Song Contest was barely reached. They have since recovered somewhat: from 2015 to 2017 they even achieved three top ten rankings in a row.

Greece got a taste for it in 2004. The Greeks then scored a top ten for eight years in a row and even won in 2005. Last year Stefania brought them back in the top ten and it could just be that Amanda Tenfjord is even going one step further this year .

Iceland is participating for the 34th time this year, but has not won a single time yet. In 2009 and 1999 the Icelanders came close with a second place. Last year, the country scored a nice fourth place.

This year is the seventeenth time that Moldavia of the party. The country managed to reach the final battle twelve times. SunStroke Project’s third-place finish in 2017 is the best result.

Sweden is one of the most successful countries. Of the sixty entries, 41 finished in the top ten. Sweden managed to win the Eurovision Song Contest six times, only once less than record holder Ireland. Since the introduction of the semi-finals, Sweden has only failed to qualify once.

Australia started the Eurovision adventure in good spirits. In the first six entries, the Australians made the top ten four times. They only missed the final once. Their best result is Dami Im’s second place in 2016.

Few countries are so ready for a Eurovision success as the United Kingdom† Since fifth place in 2009, the British have not made it to the top ten and finished no fewer than three times last.

Poland scored a second place during the first participation, but it didn’t come close after that. The only other top ten result (an eighth place) comes from 2016.

Then Serbia in 2007 for the first time without Montenegro, the winner was immediately taken. Since then, the country has been doing well. Out of fourteen participations, only three times the final was not reached.

Estonia is a country of extremes. After winning in 2001, it missed the final ten times, but the country also regularly scored top ten positions, most recently in 2018.
