Spain beats Finland in the debut of the European Championship

  • The team overcame a cold start to the match and turned around the initial Finnish goal with goals from Irene Paredes, Aitana Bonmatí, Lucía García and Mariona Caldentey

The Spanish team debuted with a victory (4-1) against Finland, although with a more complicated start than expected. Jorge Vilda opted for the gala eleven against the most affordable team in the group, with the only surprise being the ownership of Irene Guerrero. They are already first in the group, in the absence of Germany – Denmark (at 9:00 p.m.).

Sällström’s goal in the first minute of play changed the team’s plans against Finland. They assisted the attack from almost their own area, managing to surprise the Spanish defense. In fact, the goal dislodged the team, that started to show the nervousness after the target of the Finn.

To those of Jorge Vilda it was difficult for them to recover the rhythm of the usual game and avoid inaccuracies. The team’s first chances were those of full-back Leila Ouahabi, who tried twice from outside the box. But the clearest opportunities did not come until after 20 minutes of play, when the doubts of the national team disappeared.

Patri Guijarro’s disallowed goal gave the team the boost it needed to achieve victory. Aitana was able to achieve the first after an assist from Mariona. Nevertheless, the goal would come from the captain Irene Paredeswho tied the match after finishing with a header.

Finland had one more attempt to overcome the Spanish defense in the first half, but Mapi León cut with the security that is usual. The clearest opportunity to score the second goal was scored by Irene Guerrero, but it was Aitana who generated more in the first half. And her opportunity came. The second of the team arrived, again with a header, after an assist from Mapi León from outside the area. The team then recovered the rhythm of the game that characterizes it. And they managed to go into the break with the game already on track.

Finland put pressure on the return to the field of play, but Summanen ended up meeting Sandra Paños. Ona Batlle also tried it for the national team, who beat the entire rival defense with great skill, but stopped Korpela and the ball ended up going to his right. She insisted again minutes later with another header, but neither she nor Laia Aleixandri managed to increase the distance on the scoreboard.

Jorge Vilda’s team, already with much more pause in the game, tried it with almost all their players, but they continued to fail. The final 3-1 came with Lucía García, which he finished off after the free kick launched by Mapi León. The fourth could have come with a shot from Marta Cardona from outside the area, but Korpela prevented a more lofty goal.

The constant attempts of Marta Cardona, who came out as a shock almost at the end of the game, ended up having the desired result. The Real Madrid soccer player generated a penalty that Mariona Caldentey ended up transforming. The team passed the first match of the European Championship, which was a category test to face the most difficult game of the group stage against Germany.
