Southampton FC parted ways with coach Ralph Hasenhüttl shortly before the long winter break and before the last league game this year at Liverpool FC. The 4-1 defeat at home against Newcastle United on Sunday with whistles from their own fans put the club management under pressure to act. In the Premier League, Southampton are ranked 18th, slipping down a relegation zone.
“We’re below the line and in a very difficult situation at the moment,” Hasenhüttl said after the defeat. In 14 games in the Premier League, the “Saints” have only won three games, just as many games ended in draws, eight were lost.
After leaving RB Leipzig in May 2018, Hasenhüttl took over Southampton in December of the same year and managed to remain in the class with the club. In 173 games he scored an average of 1.26 points with the “Saints”. In addition to Hasenhüttl, assistant Richard Kitzbichler is also leaving the club.

With his results, Hasenhüttl “made a significant contribution to the club (…) and also played a key role in the development of our club infrastructure, identity and player squad,” said Southampton. “However, we believe that it is now time to make a change.” This Wednesday is the game in the League Cup against Sheffield Wednesday, which is being looked after on an interim basis by the previous assistant coach Rubén Sellés.
