The south of Iran was hit by earthquakes and floods on Saturday. At least 22 people have been killed in flooding in the southern province of Fars, Iranian state media reported Saturday. There are no reports of casualties from Saturday’s two earthquakes.

Heavy rain near the village of Soltan Shahbaz led to the flooding of the Rodbal Dam. 55 people have since been rescued, at least one person is still missing. The governor of the province has declared Sunday a day of mourning, state media report.

Two earthquakes struck on Saturday in Hormozgan province, also in southern Iran. At the beginning of July, an earthquake was also registered in the same province, then resulting in five deaths and 49 injuries.

The quakes had magnitudes of 5.7 and 5.8, according to Iranian media. The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Institute said one of the quakes had a magnitude of 5.5. The epicenters of the quakes were 50 and 70 kilometers northeast of the port city of Bandar Lengeh on the Persian Gulf.

According to the Iranian authorities, there are no reports of serious damage or casualties. Nevertheless, it has already been decided to send several rescue teams to the affected area. These are large areas, the local head of the Red Crescent aid organization told Iranian state television.
