Sony announces the end of the PlayStation 4

The PlayStation is one of the most important consoles on the market. In the past decade, few have been more popular than the PlayStation 4 and its successor, the PS4 Pro. Now manufacturer Sony announced the end.

The PlayStation 4 is almost a decade old. And with the PlayStation 5, the successor actually appeared in 2020, so the PS4 should be phased out as early as 2021. Due to the ongoing delivery problems with the PS5, Sony decided against this radical step. The console was still too popular and its sales figures too important. However, the manufacturer has now announced that it intends to finally phase out the model.

The End for the PlayStation 4

The fact that the production of outdated devices will eventually be discontinued is nothing new. Gamers should still be hit hard by the news, as the PlayStation 4 now enjoys almost cult status. Even used, the console brings in a lot – sometimes its price is higher than the MSRP of the cheapest PS5 version. But since the first signs of a ÜS5 Pro are slowly appearing and Sony has announced that it will soon be able to start up production of the PlayStation 5, it was only a matter of time before the PS4 was officially over.

At the same time, the Japanese company plans to release more and more titles for the latest generation of consoles and make them available for PC players as well. As a result, the PlayStation 4 is becoming increasingly obsolete.

More on the subject:

When does the PS4 end?

As has now emerged from an online presentation by Sony, among other things, the manufacturer is planning the end of the PlayStation 4 for 2025, despite continued good sales figures. This would mean that it would exceed its actual expiry date by four years. Sometime in the course of the year, Sony wants to stop production for good. From then at the latest, no more first-party games should appear for the popular console.

The good news: By 2025, the PS5 should definitely be available everywhere, if not its successor, the PS5 Pro. In the future, however, Sony also wants to make more efforts to attract PC and mobile gamers. To what extent this could affect the PlayStation games is not yet foreseeable.
