At 36 years old, the Nerazzurri goalkeeper has amazing numbers: he is unbeaten in 5 Champions League matches and 8 in the championship. So his future, despite the hiring of Martinez, is not decided…
The Christmas period is particularly suitable for listing numbers, as if you were playing one of the classic games. On Yann Sommer’s wheel there are several to celebrate. Thirteen, like the clean sheets collected this season. Eight, like the matches in which he kept a clean sheet in the championship (Lecce, Atalanta, Rome, Empoli, Venice, Verona, Lazio, Como). He is the goalkeeper who has managed to close a match without being beaten on several occasions. Five, like the clean sheets in the Champions League, where the matches in which the big Premier League teams were left empty stand out (Manchester City, Red Star, Young Boys, Arsenal, Leipzig). Fifty-nine, like the percentage of matches played by Sommer without conceding a goal: 13 out of 22 total. Finally, the last issue, probably the most impressive. Thirty-six, like the Swiss’ birthday last 17 December.

We really need to start from this last data, the personal data. Sommer is proving to be an elite goalkeeper, far from the declining trend he would normally experience at his age. Yet, the start of the season had not been particularly happy. Today, however, a different story is told. The Swiss is an absolute protagonist of the last period, making many decisive interventions in the most delicate moments, as happened in the last outing against Como on Nico Paz. He has rediscovered such an important centrality as to prompt a reflection on next season, in which the management had probably hypothesized the relay with Martinez, purchased from Genoa precisely for the prospect of being promoted to starter in the not too distant future. A scenario that could instead be more remote than originally planned.

It is therefore impossible not to notice a certain correlation between the impressive effectiveness of the defensive phase and Sommer’s excellent performance. In the last 11 matches, excluding the 17 minutes played against Fiorentina which do not represent a complete match, Inter have only conceded three goals: one from Napoli, one from Parma (useless for the purposes of the result) and one from Bayer Leverkusen. Speaking of numbers, despite one less match in the league, the Nerazzurri have the best goal difference in Serie A (+27). From here to the record, the step can be really short.
