Foo Fighters first performed on Saturday evening with their new drummer Ilan Rubin in the Fremont Theater in San Luis Obispo, California. The 900 spectators experienced the band’s 2025 concert year. Rubin, previously at Nine Inch Nails, joined the Foo Fighters in summer after the band separated from Josh Freese. Freese had stepped in after the death of long-term drummer Taylor Hawkins 2022.

Surprise show with 25 songs

Front man Dave Grohl personally introduced Rubin: “Everyone else has already said it,” said Grahl. “Now I can finally say it: Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome … the hardest motherfucker, Ilan Rubin, who is playing drums at the Foo Fighters. It is official. You can stamp the pass.”

The show announced spontaneously the day before included 25 songs, including classics such as “Everlong” and “Learn to Fly” and pieces that have not been played live for years. These included “Ex Hometed” from the debut album-a song that Grehl still wrote during Nirvana times and Kurt Cobain-and “Winnebago”, another early Grohl composition.

In an Instagram post for the show, the Foo Fighters released a teaser that sounded like a new song. This year the band toured through Indonesia, Singapore, Japan and Mexico. At the beginning of the year, the Foo Fighters had released new material for the first time since the album “But Here We Are” (2023): the track “Today’s Song” and a cover of Minor Threat “I Don’t Wanna Hear It”.

Second concert announced with Rubin

On Sunday, the Foo Fighters announced that they would play another concert with Rubin in Observatory in Santa Ana, California on September 15.
