Smoldering rubble after fire in chalet: ‘They have lost everything’

Shocked, chalet owner Chris van de Wetering stands with his Bulgarian tenant looking at the smoldering remains of the burned-down chalet. Nothing is left of the cottage at holiday park De Lithse Ham in Lith after a fierce fire on Wednesday morning.

Just before seven in the morning, Chris received a call from his Bulgarian tenant. The chalet was on fire. “Then you’ll be shocked,” he says. There was no saving the fire brigade. Flames were already shooting out of the roof.

Every effort has been made to prevent the fire from spreading to other houses. Despite that effort, a neighboring house was also badly damaged by the fire.

The couple who rented the chalet has lost everything. In the smoldering remains of the house, Chris and the man try against their better judgment to find some stuff. “It is a big drama. This man is a good tenant and had saved, but now he has lost everything.” Wednesday afternoon Chris is going to buy clothes for the couple.

The man and woman were not in the chalet when the fire broke out. No one was injured.
