While you had to be careful this morning due to local slippery conditions, it is also worth being careful tonight, tonight and tomorrow morning when you go on the road. Code yellow has been issued again by the KNMI from 8 p.m. tonight until 11 a.m. tomorrow morning.
It can become very slippery, especially due to the freezing of wet road sections and the occasional winter shower. Especially during the night, there is a very localized chance of icy conditions during a shower.
This morning there was also considerable slippery conditions locally. RTV Drenthe weatherman Roland van der Zwaag confirms this: “Last night and this morning it was a striking situation, because the air temperature was 2 degrees plus, at grass height it was just above or around 0. The road surface temperature was therefore below 0, which meant It could be very slippery on those cobblestone roads that were not gritted.”
The fact that the slippery conditions lasted so long was due to the so-called polar air, the weatherman explains. “There is then a lot of radiation to the clouds, which causes a lot of cooling close to the road surface. This will remain the case for the next 24 hours. It is becoming increasingly drier, and when the sun sets, the evening cools down very quickly. Around 7 o’clock, half past seven, it is below 0.”
And that means that it will be quite slippery again tonight: “Places that have now been sprinkled will see new precipitation. This will dilute the brine and then freeze again. Next night there will be more clear skies, more mist and therefore probably frosted fields. Because If it clears up longer, it will be 2 or 3 degrees below zero, everything will be frozen, and we will have slippery conditions tonight, tonight and tomorrow morning.”
Tomorrow it will also disappear quite slowly, at about eleven o’clock tomorrow morning it will be just above freezing point and the thaw will begin. Until then, be careful on the road.
