“Sky”: Eberl is to join Bayern as sports director at the end of 2023 – transfer fee set

After a fair separation with Leipzig

The framework conditions for Max Eberl to potentially join FC Bayern are apparently clear. Like the TV channel “Sky“ reports, the 50-year-old is willing to join RB Leipzig in Munich as sports director after his release. It is said that Eberl, who once worked for the German record champions, would like to take over the vacant position of sports director at FCB.

According to reports, concrete negotiations have not yet taken place – but these will probably follow in the next few weeks. Because Eberl and the “Red Bulls” had agreed on a separation amicably and in fair discussions, the manager was allowed to move for a written fee of less than 5 million euros. This sum was only determined as part of the dissolution of the collaboration; such a clause did not previously exist. The German Press Agency also assumes that Bavaria would have to pay around 5 million euros.

Eberl’s contract in Leipzig is dated until June 2026. The plan is for him to join FC Bayern as sports director in December or January at the latest. Bayern’s new sports director Christoph Freund remained tight-lipped on Monday about a possible future collaboration with Eberl. “That’s not my decision,” the 45-year-old Austrian replied before the German champions’ departure for the Champions League game at FC Copenhagen when asked whether he could imagine forming a sporting dual leadership team with Eberl.

Eberl was released by the Leipzig bosses last Friday. Those responsible accused the former Borussia Mönchengladbach official of lacking commitment to the club. It is no secret that Eberl has long been considered the preferred candidate of Bavaria’s honorary president Uli Hoeneß. As a player, he went through the entire youth ranks at FC Bayern and played a Bundesliga game for the Munich team in 1991.
